Patriotic Card for OWH Sketch #175

Patriotic Card for OWH Sketch 175

This patriotic and masculine card is based on OWH Sketch 175.  This is a special sketch because it was made in the memory of dedicated OWH contributor, Jane.

OWH Sketch 175

I was inspired by this sketch to try combining a sentiment from the new Hero Arts’ OWH Fundraiser stamp set with another Hero Arts’ OWH Fundraiser Stamp Set, Epic Love.

First, I started by stamping the jet and helicopter images in 1” squares.  I then embossed a small piece of kraft cardstock, inked it with some red ink (to  have some distressed red stripes to coordinate with the distressed star paper background), and cut out a 2” square to be the background for the 1” squares.  I also stamped and punched out some blue stars to add some extra detail.  And I loved how I could fit the punched star over the star in the sentiment to make a kind of “bullseye effect”!  I didn’t have enough matching brads to use on this card so I cut out holes instead and layered matching paper behind the punches.  (My Silhouette made sure the holes were all lined up).  I enjoyed making this card and hope the sender and recipient will like it as well!

-Mindy

Supplies:

Stamps: Helicopter, Jet, and Circled Star Clear Stamps (Hero Arts’ “Epic Love” Set), “Your Love is My Strength” Sentiment (Hero Arts’ Wood Block Stamp Set LP278)

Other: Crackled Stars Paper (Paper Studio), Kraft Cardstock (Paper Studio), Versafine Vintage Sepia Archival Ink (Tsukineko), Memento Ink in Lady Bug and Danube Blue (Tsukineko), A2 Stripes Embossing Folder (Paper Studio), Texture Boutique (Sissix), ½” circle punch (EK Success), Paper Trimmer (Tonic), Silhouette Cameo (Silhouette America), Advanced Tape Glider (ATG) and Adhesive (Scotch), Glue (Tombow Mono Multi)

“I Wheelie Miss You!” Card

I Wheelie Miss You

I’ve had this cute paper for a while and seeing the Midweek Throwdown Transportation challenge on Operation Write Home encouraged me to finally use it and make a kid-friendly card for OWH.   I made my punny sentiment in white and green to mimic a road sign.  A Zig 2-way glue pen helped me to tack down the skinnier parts of the die-cut.

Supplies:

Stamps: Jessie’s ABC’s (Lawn Fawn)

Diecut: Auto Retro Cutie Hatchback (Samantha Walker for the Silhouette Online Store)

Other:  Designer Paper (Imaginisce),  Versamagic Cloud White Chalk Ink (Tsukineko), Paper Trimmer (Tonic), White Zing Embossing Powder (American Crafts), Heat Tool (Martha Stewart), Corner Rounder (Paper Studio), Silhouette Cameo (Silhouette America), Advanced Tape Glider (ATG) and Adhesive (Scotch), 2 Way Glue Pen (Zig Memory System), Stamp Runner (Tombow)

“No lion, I love you!” Card

I used this cute lion on a valentine for my little nephew and cut out some extras to make some kid-friendly cards for Operation Write Home.  Coincidentally, the 2nd challenge of the OWH President’s Day Virtual Cardmaking Party (VCMP) was to make a kid-friendly critter card!

Seeing the challenge was an extra push to create a few of these cards instead of just having the pieces “lion” around ; )

Sarah Bailey Love Lion Silhouette, Lawn Fawn Jessie's ABC's

Sarah Bailey Love Lion Silhouette

I made my own sentiment with an alphabet set and popped up the end of the tails with some foam tape to add a bit of dimension.  The lion was cut on my Silhouette (a surprise Christmas present from my husband).

Thanks for taking a look and hope you have fun making cards for kids too!

Watermelon “I Love Your Smile” Card with Chevrons

I have been playing around with this card for awhile now. . .playing around with how many watermelon slices to use and where to place them. . .the colors of the layers . . . then settling on one watermelon slice within a heart in a place I think works well with the sentiment.  As an added touch, I used some added glossy accents on the “rind” to make it shiny.

I hope I didn’t over-think it!  Here it is:

Hero Arts Zig Zag Thanks Cling

It is a take on Operation Write Home sketch #158, February ODBD fruit challenge, and President’s Day VCMP Challenge #1 (Using Chevrons).  I’m a little slow in getting started, but I’m looking forward to catching up with some of the other OWH VCMP challenges!

Thanks to Our Daily Bread Designs for sponsoring the February OWH challenge and provide shipping funds to Operation Write Home!

“Hey Dude” Helicopter Card

My sister gave me the Paper Smooches “Little Fella” clear stamp set for Christmas and I was excited to create with it!

Since the Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge blog was hosting a February Designer Draft challenge, I thought I would play along.

I wanted to make a whimsical card – as if a student took a break to play with a couple of toys while working on homework:)

Here is my paper-pieced card:

Hexagon Cards

Hexagons are pretty trendy right now in the crafting world, and I was specifically inspired to create my own hexagon card after seeing Betsy Veldman’s “Sew Happy Card” (page 31 of the July/August 2012 Papercrafts Magazine as well as the online pattern available here).

Here is my glittery and groovy version:

Hexagons on Silhouette Cameo, My Mind's Eve Where the Heart Is, Lawn Fawn Jessie's ABC's

And a slightly different take:

Hexagons on Silhouette Cameo, My Mind's Eve Where the Heart Is, Lawn Fawn Jessie's ABC's

The great thing about this general design is that I could easily change the sentiment (I made a personalized birthday card in addition to the Thank You Cards above).

And confession time . . . my husband very generously gave me a Silhouette Cameo for Christmas.  It was a surprise gift, and I don’t know if that splurge fits in with my “crafting on a budget theme” of this blog, but I was very excited and started learning how to use it right away.  This hexagon design was one of my first full designs that I played with and cut on my machine.  I do really like that you can do your own designs in the Silhouette Studio software and aren’t limited to cartridges, so I am learning more about that.  And each Tuesday the Silhouette Online Store offers a free shape of the week and some shapes on clearance, so you know I’ve enjoyed checking those each Tuesday:p

I’m thankful my husband wanted to bless me with such a treat and I hope I will make good use of it!

-Mindy 🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: Jessie’s ABC’s (Lawn Fawn) (I bought myself this set as a treat on Cyber Monday and it is much easier to use than other alphabet sets I have owned because the letters are all on rectangle pieces that line up).

Other (that I remember): “Where the Heart is” 12 x 12 Glitter Papers (My Mind’s Eye), Rich Cocoa Memento Ink I think . . .or possibly Versafine Vintage Sepia Archival Ink (both by Tsukineko), Silhouette Cameo, Advanced Tape Glider (ATG) and Adhesive (Scotch), Foam Mounting Tape (3M)

Sunburst Birthday Card with Balloons

Oh my, it’s been a long time since I have blogged!  I promise I’ve been creating, just not blogging:p

To get back to blogging, I’ll share a birthday card I made awhile ago for a friend:

To make this card, I followed and modified a tutorial I found here.  I also paper pieced the balloons so they would perfectly match the designer paper (If you haven’t noticed from other posts, I absolutely love this paper pad by Basic Grey!  Such cheery designs – it won’t be the last you see of it:)

Anyways, thanks for taking a look and I’ll be back sharing more cards and projects soon!

Metallic “Hello” Card with Inchie Tiles

November’s ODBD Operation Write Home Challenge is to make a card using rarely used tools or techniques.

Since my last card was cutesy, I wanted to make a more classic and uni-sex card for this challenge.

I decided I would use an “inchie” flourish stamp that I hadn’t really ever used and turned to OWH sketch #60 for my layout.  Also, since I haven’t used embossing powder in a long time, I used some on my “Hello” sentiment to make it gold and shiny to match the metallic gold card base.
